Colonel Hagerman Tripp: His Biography, Civil War Letters, and Diary
Unbelievable! There they were! I had found the unpublished Civil War letters and diary of Colonel Hagerman Tripp, the founder of North Vernon, Indiana! These documents captured the triumphs, the defeats, and the unbearable suffering and sacrifices of the Union soldiers, but would they answer a haunting question? Was Colonel Tripp's role in the Civil War grossly exaggerated because he was the founder of North Vernon?
The timing could not have been better. In 2004, the city of North Vernon, Indiana, would celebrate its sesquicentennial birthday - 150 years old - 1854 to 2004.
The nearby Vernon citizens teasingly called North Vernon, "Lick Skillet," before 1854. Hagerman Tripp and Hiram Prather purchased 250 acres around Lick Skillet. Tripp platted a large chunk of the land at the crossroads of two railroads. The new town was named "Tripton," in his honor. Other leaders in the town thought that their "Tripton" could be confused with another "Tripton" in Northern Indiana; thus, "North Vernon" was adopted.
After the Confederate capture of Fort Sumpter, President Lincoln asked for 75,000 volunteers. Hagerman Tripp reacted immediately and formed a company G in the Indiana Sixth Regiment consisting of Jennings County men. This book will tell you mainly about the role of mill owner, Colonel Hagerman Tripp, in the Civil War. You will also find valuable, "never-before-published" documents such as "the plat description of North Vernon," "Hagerman Tripp's genealogy," his marriage and pension records, and his biography.
